Installing An ARB Snorkel

Installing An ARB Snorkel

By Brad Bokhof

A couple of weeks ago I put an ARB snorkel on my 2000 TJ. It’s something any do-it-your-selfer can do, but there are a few things you should know before you do it. First and foremost, be prepared to drill several holes in your shinny new paint job, including one monster 3" hole right through the middle of your Firewalker sticker. I figured one Firewalker sticker is better then none, so I went ahead and did it. You must drill a small pilot hole for each hole you’re going to drill or your drill bit (especially the 3" hole drill) will "dance" all over your paint job. Touch up all holes front and back with paint and let dry before installing your snorkel. Make sure you use a powerful drill or make sure you hit the sheet metal with the drill running, or all your going to do is chew up your paint job. The second thing to keep in mind is ARB is an Australian company, so everything is in metric, and some parts of the instructions are a little hard to understand, but nothing you can’t get through. About half way through the instructions they tell you to move the small vacuum box under the battery tray on the passengers side, but I suggest you move it first. It can easily be moved to the bottom underside of the hood on the passenger side. The box sits right in the way of cranking down the bolts that hold the snorkel in place and the hose that runs from the snorkel to your air filter. Speaking of air filters, you will need to buy a rivet gun if you don’t have one. The filter body has three plates that are silicone and riveted in place, to make the filter watertight. Everything else is pretty much self-explanatory and should be easy. Be prepared to spend 6-8 hours (including paint and silicone drying time) to install, and then you’ll be ready for all the deep water and raging rivers we have here in Illinois? Well at least it looks cool.
