Tellico 11/21 & 22

The Tellico/Murphy, N.C. area is really beautiful. It was lush green and for our trip and the weather cooperated completely.(Actually some leaves had fallen off, but there's lots of evergreens there.) It was warm (70+) days and crisp and cool at night. The days before and after our trail rides saw some rain, but our time there was clear and sunny.

Our campground host Steve Crawford is a jewel! Steve and his son Shane also agreed to be trail guides for us because our trail guide couldn't make it. It is hard to describe how welcome they made us feel. And Steve has a wonderful dry sense of humor that kept us smiling the whole day. On Saturday Shane Crawford and his friend Jay guided us, tuning in immediately to our craziness and keeping up with the barbs and jokes.

Unfortunately, Phil Johnson broke his rear axle on Saturday, but the boys patched him up and got him out. (See the pictures of Phil's wounded Jeep) Later that evening after dinner, Shane and Jay found an axle shaft and fixed Phil's Jeep in the garage there at the campground. Talk about full-service!

The trails at Tellico run from scenic mountain drives to 4+ rock crawling. Our toughest obstacle was the "Slick Rock" on trail #4; (It has another name, but I can't remember it) it was quite an adventure. Phil broke his axle there, I had to winch over one part (trail fine) because of my poor ground clearance, but Ceil & Tom and Carol & Bob in their Rubicon's made it un-assisted. Both had some fun though, and Carol screamed the entire final section. I've never heard a scream that loooong.

We fared pretty well, I got a scrape in my hardtop on Friday and Tom and Carol got a small fender scrape on Saturday. The scrapes were all acquired in the same place on the trail too. I guess the return trip was the most adventure of all…you will have to ask Carol about that, I had to leave very early to make it home that day.

Tellico definitely goes on my "go there again" list. It is highly recommended for both trail fun and great hospitality from the locals!

The video will be shown at the Christmas party.
